Description

This line of cutting boards is designed to meet the needs of professional chefs and serious home cooks, as well as of those looking for kitchen accessories that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional. From heavy-duty end grain chopping blocks to slim cutting boards that double as cheese platters, it is a compelling product line that challenges conventional thinking about cutting boards. Additionally, we are constantly offering new shapes and grain constructions in our effort to transform the cutting board market.

Features

  • Edge Grain: Narrow strip construction. The individual teak strips used to assemble the cutting board are narrower than they are thick, creating a particularly strong adhesive bond.
  • Distinctive Colors: Young teak trees on the plantation are cut to make room for other trees to grow to maturity. These younger trees have a greater proportion of lighter sapwood than mature teak trees and this fact accounts for the distinctive contrast with the darker heartwood.
  • Harvested teak: It is important to note that not all plantation grown teak is of the same quality. These cutting boards are made from the highest quality of all plantation grown teak - comparable to old growth teak.

I just received the end grain cutting board and am planning on giving it as a gift. While it appears very well made, the coloring is significantly darker than pictured here. In fact, the color is such... (see entire review)

Craftsmanship

The fundamental difference is in the harvesting – or thinning - young teak trees on our plantations to make room for other trees to grow to maturity. These younger trees have a greater proportion of lighter sapwood than mature teak trees and this fact accounts for the distinctive contrast with the darker heartwood. In terms of strength and durability young teak is essentially the same as mature teak. Rather than burning the thinnings or sending them off to Asia by the container-load, we’ve found a way to mill these smaller logs and turn them into the beautiful products you see here.

In light of the fact that sources of indigenous mature teak in places like Myanmar (Burma) and Indonesia have been largely depleted by both legal and illegal logging, future supplies of teak will come almost entirely from plantations. Given this reality, it is important to note that not all plantation teak is of the same quality. Some plantations receive too much rainfall or are artificially irrigated. Others don’t receive the proper nutrients from the soil and must be fertilized. Our manufacturer carefully chooses the location of our plantations to match the precipitation levels and soil conditions found in the world’s most renowned teak growing regions. The result is slow grown teak with a dense grain that comes very close to matching the structural and aesthetic characteristics of old-growth teak.

Summary

The grandest of tropical hardwoods, teak is valued for its durability, sophisticated look and resistance to the elements.
