Expert Review
We tested the Supentown swamp cooler line in May of 2009 and were pleasantly surprised with the results. In our testing room, we were able to see that the coolers when filled with cold water and ice were able to output air that was ten degrees cooler than the ambient room temperature. You need to know that we do not recommend this type of cooler for East Coast locations as most people located here do not want increased humidity levels in their homes. However, an evaporative cooler will deliver wonderful results when used in hot, dry locations where some added humidity is not an issue. These coolers are perfect if you are looking to spot cool an area (either indoors or out) and would like about a 12 degrees temperature drop.
Summary
The Air Cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), meaning the unit sucks air through a wick saturated with water. As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature! This is not an air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy.
